People ask us all the time how we came up with the name for our store. Well, my mother, Caren, and I have both always loved moose and collected all kinds, from funny, goofy ones to real-looking ones. Mom always said, “If we open a store let’s call it The Quilted Moose.” So here we are. Our store started out in Cashmere, Washington back in 2007, where Caren and Linda opened the store and ran it for almost two years. Then, Linda’s health wouldn’t allow her to continue working and Caren’s parents were both suddenly ill. Together they made the painful decision to close the store. Caren was determined to reopen the store later, when her parents were better. Sadly Grandma passed away, but Grandpa’s health did improve. Meanwhile, Caren and her husband Dave, along with Grandpa, had moved to Port Angeles, Washington. She looked at opening her store again there, but just wasn’t finding the right building. Also, my husband, Cory, and I had moved to Colfax from Pullman and kept telling Caren that Colfax really needed a quilt shop. After a few suggestions and some looking around at different buildings, I finally talked her into it. So, on October 1, 2009, The Quilted Moose opened its doors for the first time in Colfax, Washington. I run the shop and from time to time Mama Moose stops by to help out and drop off samples she has made for the shop. We have both been sewing since we were little girls. Grandma started us out with hand sewing scraps together. I can remember when she would hand me those scraps and I would crawl under her sewing table and sit on the floor and sew all those fun scraps together. As I got older she showed me how to sew on a machine. We always did some kind of craft project when I went to Grandma’s house. My love for crafts of all kinds and for quilting came from her, and watching my mother doing beautiful stitches with her hand quilting and hand embroidery. Because of this, we both love our jobs and are very grateful that we are here in Colfax with our shop. We hope that you enjoy it as much as we do.
